Applied English Information Technology (AEIT)

Text: Technical reference materials for the GNU Emacs editor, basic Unix commands, and Web page authoring will be handed out in class. Advanced materials will be available on the Web.

1. General Instructional Objectives (教育目標)

This course prepares students to locate, evaluate, and use appropriate information and communication technology (ICT) resources for applied English and intercultural studies at the graduate level. Students will learn to evaluate the use of technology in language education and cultural affairs from several perspectives: individual competencies, technical standards, social and cultural contexts, values, and ethical principles. Knowledge will be applied to specific contexts related to students' interests.

2. Specific Behavioral Objectives (個別課題)

  1. Apply information literacy skills to research.
  2. Collaborate in English via e-mail and the Web.
  3. Create valid, accessible XHTML documents.
  4. Create appropriate metadata for resources.
  5. Evaluate ICT use for specific purposes.

3. Learning Strategies (教育・学習の方法)

  1. Classes will meet in a GNU/Linux computer lab. Students will create Web portfolios that include bibliographies and case studies. Case studies will focus on the use of ICT in specific contexts related to students' interests. Web pages will be valid XHTML documents that conform to international standards and best practices for accessibility.
  2. Reading materials will include technical reports, guidelines, and other materials. All required reading materials will be available on the Web as open content.
  3. Participation will include resource sharing and collaboration by e-mail and social bookmarking. Active online participation in English is expected.

4. Evaluation (評価方法)

Grades: participation (50%) and Web portfolios (50%).
