Seminar: Writing for the World Wide Web

1. General Instructional Objectives (教育目標)
Students will learn to write true stories in English and
publish multimedia documents with World Wide Web technology.
They will learn basic principles of journalism and technical
skills for media production. They will also increase their
awareness of cultural, ethical, legal, and technical issues in
communication on the global Internet.
2. Specific Behavioral Objectives (個別課題)
- Find interesting stories in daily life.
- Gather, verify, and report facts in English.
- Use information resources appropriately.
- Appreciate ethical and legal issues.
- Develop media production skills.
- Create accessible Web documents.
3. Learning Strategies (教育・学習の方法)
- We will meet weekly in a Unix (GNU/Linux) computer
laboratory for discussions, demonstrations, and Web page
editing.
- E-mail discussions: We will share stories and ideas by e-mail,
including mobile mail. Members will be expected to contribute
weekly in English.
- Reading materials: Required readings will include short texts, news stories, and
technical references. All materials will be available on the
seminar Web site.
- Students' Web portfolios will include stories,
resource lists, reviews, and progress reports.
Class preparation:
- Prepare content for portfolios.
- Read for Graduation Research.
- Participate in e-mail discussions.

Grades: participation (50%), Web portfolios (50%).

6. Other Information (その他)
- Since students must writre and share their own stories, this
seminar requires independent thinking and active participation in
face-to-face and e-mail discussions.
- The weekly schedule may be adjusted according to students'
needs and current events. Many class sessions will include reviews
of previous activities and work done outside of class.
- Graduation research will be related to media or
intercultural communication. Research projects will grow from
students' Web portfolios.
- Student Web pages are visible only on campus.
