■National Pension Plan

The National Pension Plan is a public pension program established by the National Pension Act in Japan. People who pay into this plan will receive retirement payments when they reach the age of 65 or disability payments if they become disabled.
All people living in Japan, including international students with residence cards, are required to join this plan and pay the premiums once they reach the age of 20.
If you have any trouble paying the premium, there is a system to have payments postponed or exempted by application. Even if you do not pay the premiums while a student, the time after you join the plan is recognized as the insured period, and you can also receive disability payments if you become disabled. You must apply for postponement or exemption every year.
For more details, please check the Japan Pension Service website, or contact the National Pension supervisor at the city hall or ward office.
