Exploring the World of English Picture Books at the 2026 ND School Festival

The event introduced a wide variety of English-language picture books from Japan and around the world, highlighting their unique characteristics and creative ways to use them. Visitors also enjoyed interactive storytelling sessions designed especially for children.
We were delighted to collaborate with Dr. Suzanne Kamata, a researcher and author, who shared her expertise and passion for children’s literature.
Approximately 70 picture books were displayed, including English-language picture books from Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and various African countries, as well as wordless picture books that tell stories entirely through illustrations. Both children and adults enthusiastically explored the diverse collection, often becoming deeply absorbed in the books.
We received many positive comments from visitors, including:
- There were so many books I had never seen before. It was really enjoyable!
- I especially liked having stories read aloud to us.
- I was fascinated by the wordless picture book in which stories from Morocco and Australia unfold from opposite ends of the book and eventually come together.
- It’s wonderful that both children and adults can enjoy these books together.
One particularly heartwarming moment was seeing a mother select an English picture book and read it aloud to her child, creating a shared experience through storytelling.
Prof. Kamata’s engaging and expressive storytelling sessions were especially well received, captivating audiences of different ages. She also expressed her enthusiasm for participating again next year.
Overall, the event provided a valuable opportunity for visitors of all ages to discover the richness and diversity of English-language picture books from around the world. It also reminded us that picture books can transcend linguistic and cultural boundaries, bringing people together through stories, illustrations, and shared experiences.
We sincerely thank everyone who visited and participated in our event!
