第14回英語スピーチコンテスト
2024年10月20日に第14回英語スピーチコンテストを無事終了しました。

最初に学長からご挨拶をいただき、その後進行役は学生スタッフが担当しました。12名の高校生がそれぞれとても興味深いテーマのスピーチをされました。その真摯な姿に会場は水を打ったようになり、久しぶりに緊張感あふれる瞬間に臨席することができました。
MC担当の学生スタッフは以下のようにコメントしています。
私にとっては、高校生スピーチコンテストを見ること自体が初めてでした。ですが、たった5分ほどのスピーチで、出場者の皆さんのスピーチ に込められた想いや、注いできた努力が伝わってきたと同時に、大学生の私とは異なる社会で生活している高校生の皆さんが感じている葛藤や考えなどを、学ばせていただきました。
出場者の高校生の皆さんが緊張されていたのはもちろんですが、コンテストで一番初めに話し出す司会者として、会場内の雰囲気作りや、コンテストを進めていかなければならない緊張感や責任感は今まで感じたことがないものでした。大きなミスなく終えられたことはよかったですが、同時に、自分が人前で話す時に出てしまうクセや、改善点など、この経験がなければ気づくことがなかったことに気づくこともでき、とても貴重な経験になりました。
審査中は、昨年度のコンテストの優勝者である学生が、大学生活を英語で紹介しました。
コンテスト後、「懐かしい光景でした。言語関係なく人前で話すこと自体が楽しくなった経験のひとつなので、スタッフとして活躍できて良かったです。」とコメントしています。
コンテスト後、Herder教授と学生スタッフが中心となって用意した軽食と学科紹介を兼ねた時間では、残っていただけた高校生とその関係者のみなさまと交流することができました。かわるがわる審査員を務めた教員と熱心に話す姿や、またリベンジしたいという言葉に、改めて心打たれた一日でした。次回の15回スピーチコンテストも今から楽しみです。

On October 20, Kyoto Notre Dame University hosted its 14th annual English Speech Contest, where 12 talented high school students, selected from over 60 applicants, demonstrated their impressive public speaking skills. The quality of the speeches made the judging process especially tough this year, but it was a pleasure to see such diverse and meaningful topics being addressed.
While the content of the speeches was outstanding, I would like to offer some advice for improvement: focus on clear pronunciation and pacing. You don’t have to sound exactly like a native speaker, but clearly articulating each word and maintaining an appropriate speed will help the audience understand your message and stay engaged. Overall, it was a fantastic event, and I commend all the participants for their hard work and dedication.

Every year, the speeches get better and better. Young Japanese women are clearly and convincingly expressing their opinions, their wishes, and their ideas for their own lives and for the future of Japan. It is a pleasure to listen and learn from this younger generation.
One tip to anyone participating in a speech contest: The judges may be watching you from the moment you stand up, all throughout your speech, and even when you finish and return to your seat. Stand up straight, project confidence and show that you are in control of your emotions – whatever you may be feeling inside.

I was very impressed not just with the students’ presentation skills but also their clear and heartfelt messages. All participants showed a lot of passion for their topics and delivered interesting ideas. Nerves can be difficult to overcome, especially in public speaking. But remember that by participating in the Speech Contest, you are improving your English, communication, and interpersonal skills. So you have already succeeded and grown as a person before you even set foot on stage.
One last thought: The best speeches are the ones that cause me to stop scoring and just listen to the speaker because I’m caught up in their message or story.”
